Angel Studios’ David, the animated feature from South Africa’s Sunrise Animation Studios, exceeded industry expectations with a $42 million domestic opening weekend, positioning it as one of the surprise hits of the holiday season.

The film, which tells the story of the shepherd boy who would become Israel’s greatest king, benefited from strong word-of-mouth and a passionate faith-based audience that turned out in force.
